King of the Jungle – All About Lions

Posted on 17. Nov, 2009 by Dee in Animals

Unlike other big cats, lions are sociable animals with a fixed hierarchy and family structure. Although the beautiful golden manes that crown their face give them the title of the kings of the jungle, male lions are in fact the second largest of the big cats, after the Bengal Tiger.

Asian lions are smaller than African lions in terms of both, size as well as the number of pride members. The pride of typically comprises the head male, his harem of four to six lionesses, and their cubs. Lionesses do most of the hunting, while male lions are extremely territorial and fiercely protect their prides from intruding lions, hyenas and other animals. Male lion cubs reach maturity at around 2 or three years. They then leave the pride to look for young females to establish their own prides.

Did you know? Asiatic lions once roamed free across the plains of Europe, Iran, India and even south Russia. Today these regal beasts number only about 400 of these magnificent beasts live in the protected Gir Forest in India.
