Although Steamboat Willie was the third cartoon made by Walt Disney that featured Mickey Mouse, it was the first cartoon to feature Mickey the way we know him today. It was also the first Disney cartoon to have synchronized sound effects.

Released in 1928, Steamboat Willie was an instant success and made Mickey Mouse the leading cartoon figure onscreen. It also marked the beginning of Walt Disney’s career and today, over forty years after his death, the Walt Disney company is the largest entertainment company in the world with annual revenues of over 38 billion dollars!

Did you know? Before his wife suggested the name Mickey, Walt Disney wanted to name his cartoon mouse Mortimer Mouse.
